01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
A short walk south of Nerima Station on the second floor of a Toyotamakita building, Uminchu brings a slice of the southern islands to Tokyo. At the table, classic stir-fries like goya champuru and fu champuru—where wheat gluten is soaked in egg before meeting vegetables in the wok—are easy first orders. Fresh umibudo (sea grapes), peanut-based jimami tofu, and fried chicken accompanied by refreshing shikuwasa-radish ponzu provide an array of vibrant small plates to pair with a drink.
Slow-Cooked Pork and Peppery Noodles
The menu also leans into Okinawa's hearty meat cookery. Slices of pork belly simmered until tender as rafute, cartilaginous soki spare ribs braised soft, and collagen-rich tebichi (pig's trotters) deliver the rich, sweet-savory profile typical of the islands. Spicy pochigi sausages make another fine bar snack, while soki abura soba offers a bolder finish: brothless noodles tossed in chili and tare sauce, crowned with meltingly soft braised ribs.
Island Awamori and Late Hours
The awamori lineup ranges from accessible everyday labels like Zanpa and Kikunotsuyu to aged koshu such as Zanpa Premium from Yomitan and Ryukyu Ocho from Miyakojima. With tatami and raised zashiki seating, the dining room easily accommodates leisurely gatherings. Service runs from 17:00 to 5:00 the following morning from Monday to Thursday; Friday operates from 0:00 to 5:00 and 17:00 to 24:00; and Saturday and Sunday cover 0:00 to 8:00 as well as 17:00 to 24:00.
